What does a freelance e-commerce manager cost?

Three ways of working, each with an indicative rate. These are my own numbers, not a market average: freelance e-commerce managers in the Netherlands charge between €50 and €195 per hour depending on experience and specialisation. At roughly €95 per hour I sit in the middle, with 10+ years of marketplace experience (Amazon NL/DE, Bol.com) and more than €2 million in marketplace revenue managed. Final amounts are in the quote you receive within one working day after an intro call.

    Rates and ways of working

Day rate (interim) · €760 per day
About €95 per hour. For temporary leadership, 2 to 5 days a week, on-site in the Utrecht region or remote across NL/EU.
    Project fee · from €2,500
For a scoped engagement with a fixed outcome: an audit with plan, a Bol.com launch, an Amazon DE roll-out or a feed automation.
Retainer · from €1,750 per month
Ongoing Amazon and Bol.com account management: two fixed days a month, weekly trading review and monthly reporting.

After a 30-minute intro call you receive a written quote within one working day: scope, cadence and final rate. For context: a permanent e-commerce manager, including employer costs, quickly runs to €6,000 or more per month, without the option to stop monthly. An interim engagement of three days a week usually stays below that.

    What is always included

    • A baseline in week 1 (account, listings, advertising, stock, product data, reporting) with a prioritised backlog
    • Work inside your own accounts and tools; you keep all access, data and documents
    • A written weekly update and a compact KPI dashboard
    • Handover to your team or permanent successor, with documentation
    • No agency margin, no six-month minimum, cancellable monthly

    What is not included

    • Advertising budget on Amazon, Bol.com or social (stays yours, on your accounts)
    • Tool subscriptions such as Channable, Helium10 or n8n hosting (in your name, so you keep them)
    • Photography, video production and third-party translations (I arrange them and pass the cost through without markup)

Permanent hire or interim: the maths

A permanent e-commerce manager costs €6,000 or more per month including employer contributions, holiday pay and pension, on a gross salary of €4,500 to €5,500. Add notice periods, recruitment cost and three months of onboarding. An interim engagement of three days a week costs about €9,900 per month but can be cancelled monthly, starts within weeks and brings experience from day one. Two days a week (€6,600) is usually enough to lead a marketplace operation that is already running.

    Frequently asked questions about rates

Why are there numbers here when most freelancers don't publish them?

Because otherwise you need three conversations to find out whether we are in the same range. The numbers are indicative; the quote after the intro call is final and I don't deviate from it.

Is there a minimum engagement length?

No. Interim engagements can be cancelled monthly. For a project we agree a fixed outcome and a fixed price up front; that is independent of hours.

    Do you charge travel costs?

Not within the Utrecht region. Beyond that €0.23 per kilometre or train fare, only for on-site work.

Can you work on a results basis?

For advertising and marketplace growth part of the fee can be variable on a KPI agreed in advance (for example TACOS or revenue per channel). We agree that after the baseline, never before.

What does a standalone audit cost?

The 7-point Amazon NL audit and the automation audit are free: you get the biggest opportunities within 48 hours. A full marketplace audit with a plan starts at €2,500 as a project.

    How fast can you start?

Usually within a few weeks, depending on current commitments. The first week is always a baseline, so priorities are fixed by week two.
